Culinary Academy (ages 11 to 16) – April 19 & 20, 2022

Is your child interested in learning to prepare food? Are they curious about where food comes from? Currituck County 4-H is hosting a 2-day Culinary Workshop for youth ages 11 to 16. Participants will engage in hands-on cooking challenges that involve food preparation techniques, food and recipe cost analysis, food and kitchen safety, and investigations into the importance of healthy eating and physical activity. Let’s Learn to Fish (ages 8 to 13) – April 19, 2022

Do you get excited when a fish tugs at the end of your line? If so, you are not alone. Fishing is one of the most popular sports in America. Most everyone has a “fishing hole” near their home—whether it’s a creek, pond, lake, or the ocean. Fishing can be as simple as using a cane pole, a line, a cork, and a hook baited with a worm. But you can have more fun and success if you learn as much as possible about the diets and habits of a wide variety of fish. Join us to learn the fishing basics and then try our luck in the local waters around N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck Center. This program is for youth ages 8 to 13. We will meet at N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck Center at 120 Community Way in Barco, NC at 9:00 a.m. From there, we will fish the local ponds. The pick-up will be at the same location at 12:00 noon. We will provide equipment and bait, or bring your own if you would like. https://fishingspringbreak2022.eventbrite.com

Electric/Energy Field Trip – April 18, 2022

Join the Currituck County 4-H staff for a field trip to the Outer Banks to explore the world of alternative and renewable energy. Youth ages 10-18 will leave N.C. Cooperative Extension-Currituck County Center, 120 Community Way, Barco NC at 8:30 a.m. and return at 5:00 p.m.

We will begin the day at the Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese NC, learning about wave energy and the Waves to Water desalination process that uses multiple types of energy to create fresh drinking water from the ocean. We will then drive over to  Jennette’s Pier to participate in a hands-on wind energy experiment. Participants will make a model of a wind turbine, test it in a wind tunnel and then have the opportunity to observe their model as it collects, stores, and transforms wind to power. Participants will need to bring a bag lunch. There is a registration fee for this workshop of $8.00. Register and pay through Eventbrite at https://electricfieldtripobx.eventbrite.com
