What: Firescaping Workshop: ($10/person registration fee covers materials and refreshment break). You do not have to attend the NC Prescribed Fire Council meeting to register for this workshop.
Who: Extension Agents, Master Gardeners, community members, and natural resource professionals.
Where: NC Zoo Education Bldg. Asheboro, NC
Why? North Carolina has a long history of wildfires. As people move into natural areas, their risk of wildfires increases. Fortunately, there are modifications homeowners can make to their home and landscape to be more fire-resistant.
Workshop Goals: The goal of this hands-on workshop is to teach participants fire-resistant landscaping (i.e. firescaping) recommendations to protect their homes and/or to teach others about firescaping. The workshop will cover firescaping basics, procedures for conducting a home landscape risk assessment, and suggestions for firescaping education and outreach to adults and youth. Most of the workshop will be spent working in small groups creating a firescape design, so participants learn to problem solve different real-world scenarios.
Organizers: Holly Campbell, Extension Associate, Southern Regional Extension Forestry; Hannah Thompson, Wildfire Mitigation Specialist, North Carolina Forest Service; Justin Query, Wildfire Mitigation Forester, North Carolina Forest Service; Jenn Fawcett and Laurel Kays, Extension Associates; North Carolina State University
