Sandy Smith

Sanford “Sandy” Smith is a Teaching Professor and Extension Specialist of Forest Resources for Penn State Extension. His professional and academic expertise is in forestry and natural resources education programs for youth and adults, adult volunteerism in conservation and environmental education, and forest stewardship on private forestlands. He provides statewide leadership for 4-H & youth programming in natural and environmental resources, and applied research related to natural resources education. Smith has worked at the county, state, and international level (Poland and Nepal) over his 38-year career. He received his B.S. from the University of Maine, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Penn State.

Dave Jackson

David “Dave” Jackson is a Forest Resources Educator for Penn State Extension in Central Pennsylvania. He has been with Penn State in his current position since January 2002. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from The College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse, NY, in 1988 and completed a Master’s of Forest Resources at The Pennsylvania State University in 2007. Dave worked in various positions with the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Industry, State Forestry, and Private Forestry Consulting before coming to Penn State.

Join other K-8 classroom and nonformal educators as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree K-8 Curriculum Guide. Every participant will leave the workshop with the PLT K-8 Activity Guide which includes 96 activities correlated to the NC Standard Course of Study and Essential Standards. The PLT activity guides are provided free of charge to participants through support from the NC Forestry Association. CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I in the EE Certification Program.

Differentiated instruction? Technology connections? Literature links? STEM? The PLT activity guide covers it all!!! The PreK-8 guide is correlated to the Common Core (math and ELA) as well as to the NC Essential Standards (science and social studies). Participants will learn about the materials through direct engagement in the PLT activities throughout the workshop. Please bring a bag lunch and prepare to be outside!

Please make a personal commitment to attend to ensure there are enough materials and space for everyone. Parking directions will be sent prior to the workshop. Cancellations made by January 9 will receive a $10 refund. Cancellations after this date will not receive a refund.

This workshop will cover the Southeastern Forests and Climate Change Secondary Module and the NEW Carbon & Climate E-Unit

Project Learning Tree® (PLT) and PINEMAP have partnered to develop a secondary module on climate change impacts on southern forest ecosystems, the role of forests in sequestering carbon, and strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to changing climatic conditions. The module is designed for use in life science, environmental science, and agriculture courses in grades 9-12, with potential use in middle school or community college courses. The Carbon & Climate e-unit was developed for grades 6-8, and is an integrated online unit provided through PLT's online portal.

There is a $20 registration fee for this workshop, and all participants will leave with a printed SFCC activity guide, access to the online SFCC portal and the Climate & Carbon e-unit. This workshop will be presented by NC PLT Coordinator, Renee Strnad.
