You can choose from a wide selection of topics including forest farming, basic forestry terms, wildlife, forest succession, and private land recreation. This workshop is offered in partnership with NC State Extension Forestry, NC Forest Service, NC Tree Farm Program, and NC Wildlife Resources Commission.

N.C. A&T and N.C. State Cooperative Extension are working together to educate the public about heirs property! We are hosting six heirs property summits across the state. Join us for hands-on training sessions that will provide valuable materials and guidance to avoid involuntary property loss, and protect and preserve family land for generations to come.

Attend our hands-on, practical workshop about heirs property! Learn about the origin and history of heirs property and estate planning and legal strategies to secure their land. Come to connect with resources and other technical assistance including some potential opportunities to listen from a panel who are dealing with heir’s issues.
Using an heirs property curriculum developed by Alcorn State University and SRDC in Mississippi, and utilizing the resources obtained through Train-the-trainer training by HPP project partners we are committed to delivering these educational training and materials for North Carolinians.

Do you ever wonder what trees and plants are around you when you are walking through the forest? Join N.C. Cooperative Extension on a hike in Stone Mountain State Park and we will help you get acquainted with the flora you see during the summer while hiking in the mountains of NC. We will follow the Widow’s Creek Trail as it passes through different forest types and explore how forests establish themselves on the terrain.

This 2 to 3 mile round trip hike is considered moderate to strenuous. So be prepared for a little bit of a challenge. We will have two groups, one for faster hikers and another for those wanting a bit more of a stroll.

Following the hike/workshop, lunch will be provided.

This event will take place rain or shine, although, severe weather will dictate that we reschedule.

hosted by the Sustainable Forestry & Land Retention Project

Connecting youth to Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Math. Increase knowledge; identify career options; have fun!

Meet and mingle with STEAM professionals who received their academic degrees at North Carolina institutions. Dive into other STEAM-related topics and careers like natural resources and water quality. All this, door prizes and more during this full day of activities and learning for rising 9th- to 12th-grade students, their parents, school counselors, educators and youth leaders. Exhibitors will include natural resources and agricultural agencies, STEM vendors, forestry companies, and colleges and universities. Lunch and refreshments provided free of charge. At the end of the day, registered students can spend up to 90 minutes (at no cost!) enjoying the Rocky Mount Event Center's recreation area featuring an arcade, a rope course and an indoor rock climbing wall! Agenda and presenters are subject to change.

Join preservice teachers, K-8 classroom and nonformal educators as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of this guide that includes 50 hands-on, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people’s awareness and knowledge about their environment. This guide includes revised favorites and new activities. The activities in this resource are supported by a robust Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) correlation guide, building durable STEM Skills, and differentiated instruction. In addition, correlations for the NC Standard Course of Study in Science and Social Studies will be available in Fall 2024 after the completion of an extensive summer correlation project! CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I or II in the EE Certification Program (K-8).

This workshop will cover the Southeastern Forests and Climate Change Secondary Module, selected activities from the K-8 Explore Your Environment guide, and provide access to PLT's Carbon & Climate e-Unit.

Project Learning Tree® (PLT) partnered with PINEMAP to develop a secondary module on climate change impacts on southern forest ecosystems, the role of forests in sequestering carbon, and strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to changing climatic conditions. The module is designed for use in life science, environmental science, and agriculture courses in grades 9-12, with potential use in middle school or community college courses. The Carbon & Climate e-unit was developed for grades 6-8, and is an integrated online unit provided through PLT's online portal.

There is a $20 registration fee for this workshop, however, all the PLT materials (a printed SFCC activity guide, the online SFCC portal, and the Climate & Carbon e-unit) are provided at no cost to workshop participants (a $50 value!) through support from the NC Forestry Association. CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I or II in the EE Certification Program. If the cost of this workshop is a barrier to your participation, please reach out to Renee, NC PLT State Coordinator, at renee_strnad@ncsu.edu.
