Join classroom and nonformal educators as we explore activities in the newly released Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide and the secondary module, Places We Live. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of both guides-- a $55 value!! The K-8 guide includes 50 hands-on, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people’s awareness and knowledge about their environment. All the activities in the K-8 guide are supported by a robust Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) correlation guide, help build durable STEM Skills, and include differentiated instruction strategies. The Place We Live Secondary module helps students dive deeper into topics around community development and green space. CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I in the EE Certification Program (K-12).

The PLT activity guides are provided free of charge to participants through support from the NC Forestry Association. If the registration fee for this workshop is a barrier for you, please reach out to the the NC PLT Coordinator, Renee Strnad, at renee_strnad@ncsu.edu.

Join classroom and nonformal educators as we explore climate-related activities in Project Learning Tree's Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide and the secondary module Southeastern Forests and Climate Change. Participants will also receive access to PLT's Carbon & Climate E-Unit. This workshop is geared towards educators working with middle and high school students, but is open to anyone that is interested in the subject and materials. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of both printed guides and online access to the E-Unit, a $70 value for all materials! CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I in the EE Certification Program (K-12).

The K-8 guide includes 50 hands-on, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people’s awareness and knowledge about their environment. All the activities in the K-8 guide are supported by a robust Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) correlation guide, help build durable STEM Skills, and include differentiated instruction strategies. The Southeastern Forests and Climate Change secondary module addresses climate change impacts on southern forest ecosystems, the role of forests in sequestering carbon, and strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to changing climatic conditions. The module is designed for use in life science, environmental science, and agriculture courses in grades 9-12, with potential use in middle school or community college courses. Lastly, the Carbon & Climate e-unit was developed for grades 6-8, and is an integrated online unit provided through PLT's online portal.

*Location will be revealed to registrants closer to time of event.

Open to residents of Henderson County only.

Pre-registration is required and proof of residency will be requested upon arrival at the pick up site.

Those who RSVP will receive a tree list and the pick-up address at the email address as the event draws closer.

Those who register and reside in Henderson County are eligible to receive up to five free trees total (one per tree removed). Before and after pictures of the Bradford Pear trees you cut down must be shown to organizers at the pick-up to receive replacement trees. Note, this program is geared toward homeowners/landowners. Trees should never be removed from property without the owner's permission.

A limited number of replacement trees/shrubs in 5-7 gallon pots will be available on a first come, first served basis. Some examples of native trees that have been distributed in the past include redbud, serviceberry, black cherry and white oak.

N.C. A&T and N.C. State Cooperative Extension are working together to educate the public about heirs property! We are hosting six heirs property summits across the state. Join us for hands-on training sessions that will provide valuable materials and guidance to avoid involuntary property loss, and protect and preserve family land for generations to come.

Attend our hands-on, practical workshop about heirs property! Learn about the origin and history of heirs property and estate planning and legal strategies to secure their land. Come to connect with resources and other technical assistance including some potential opportunities to listen from a panel who are dealing with heir’s issues.
Using an heirs property curriculum developed by Alcorn State University and SRDC in Mississippi, and utilizing the resources obtained through Train-the-trainer training by HPP project partners we are committed to delivering these educational training and materials for North Carolinians.

Mountain forest management in North Carolina is much like the landscape of the Appalachian Mountains. It’s never quite what you expected but you’re so glad to be a part of it. Appalachian hardwood lumber is some of the most prized lumber in the world. Growing it from seedling to a quality sawlog, though, requires careful management. Join NC State Extension Forestry as we examine forest management being conducted in Avery and Mitchell Counties and see what practices can be employed on your property to generate a beautiful and profitable stand. A myriad of natural resource professionals from the Natural Resource Conservation Service, The Nature Conservancy, Roughed Grouse Society, and the landowner, Jim Phillips, will provide a walking panel discussion on managing quality hardwood sawtimber in the Appalachian Mountains.
